Smartphone maker BlackBerry (BBRY) advanced 4% after Reuters, citing sources, said the company management is considering plans to go private.

Six companies made their public trading debuts in New York, as Cvent (CVT), Frank's International (FI), MiX Telematics (MIXT), Stock Building Supply (STCK), World Point Terminals (WPT), and QEP Midstream Partners (QEPM) all had initial public offerings.

Among the notable gainers was Priceline.com (PCLN), which advanced 5% and approached $1,000 per share after its second-quarter results beat estimates and several firms raised their price targets on the stock.

Also rising after its better-than-expected results and outlook was Ubiquiti Networks (UBNT), which gained 27%. Among the noteworthy losers were Merge Healthcare (MRGE), down 44%, and Dendreon (DNDN), which fell 24%, after both companies reported worse than expected quarterly results and disclosed plans for executives to leave.
