Dell (DELL) shares were down about 3% near noon after Bloomberg reported, citing sources, that Michael Dell and Silver Lake likely will not raise their $13.65 per share bid to take the computer maker private.

Also this morning, the company's special committee filed supplemental materials with the SEC to address questions from shareholders and the advisory firm ISS, stating that a competing proposal from Carl Icahn and Southeastern Asset Management relies on a sum-of-parts valuation of the company that implies "unrealistic multiples."

Among the notable gainers were some Chinese solar panel makers, including Yingli Green Energy (YGE), which rose 12% after Reuters reported that the EU and China are close to a deal over alleged dumping of solar panels.

Also higher were shares of Tesla Motors (TSLA), which advanced nearly 3% after saying it has received hundreds of orders for its new Model S sedan in Hong Kong. Among the noteworthy losers were a number of gold miners, such as AngloGold Ashanti (AU), which slid 9% amid another pullback in the price of the precious metal.
