Midday movers: Microsoft, General Electric

Stocks are lower, with the Nasdaq the worst performer of the major averages.

After Thursday’s closing bell, Google (GOOG) reported second-quarter earnings per share and revenue, minus traffic acquisition costs, that missed analysts' consensus projection. 

Microsoft (MSFT) also reported earnings excluding certain items and revenue that fell short of expectations. Shares of both fell at the start of trading. However, Microsoft shares remained down 11% near midday, while Google recovered the majority of its early session losses to be down only 1.5% near noon.

While Microsoft was the Dow's worst performer after its quarterly results, General Electric (GE) led all blue chips with a an advance of over 4% following its own earnings report. 

Among the notable gainers following their earnings reports were Chipotle Mexican Grill (CMG), up nearly 8%, Whirlpool (WHR), up more than 7%, and Cubist Pharmaceuticals (CBST), up 9%. 

Among the noteworthy losers following their earnings reports and subsequent analyst downgrades were Advanced Micro Devices (AMD), down 14%, and Intuitive Surgical (ISRG), down 12%.
