Staples (SPLS) declined 7% after reporting revenues that fell short of consensus and guiding toward sales and earnings from continuing operations that disappointed.

Conversely, another retailer that reported this morning, Big Lots (BIG), saw its shares advance nearly 5% after its profit from continuing operations beat Street expectations.

Among the notable gainers were Petrobras (PBR), which rose 12% after announcing an increase to its diesel prices, and American Apparel (APP), up 11% after reporting better than expected earnings and same-store sales that rose 7% during the holiday quarter.

Among the noteworthy losers following their earnings reports were AeroVironment (AVAV), The Fresh Market (TFM) and American Eagle (AEO), which all saw their shares decline about 10%.
