Behind GM's huge Corvette recall

Corvette owners have known about this problem for years, but nothing happened until Japan spoke up.

This sounds worse: This is a recall of a recall. A fix for a 2006 recall that went bad.

GM recalled about 31,000 Corvettes in 2006 for the same problem, The New York Times reports. The company "fixed" the issue by using a foam adhesive -- and workers later applied the same foam adhesive on the production line in Bowling Green, Ky.

It didn't take long for Corvette owners to complain that the foam didn't work. The complaints reportedly went to the correct place -- the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration -- but the agency never followed up with its own "recall query," the Times reports.

The problem lingered until Japan decided it wasn't happy with the quality of its imported Corvettes. The Japanese Ministry of Land Infrastructure and Transport complained directly to GM, the Times reports.

That finally spurred GM into action and prompted the recall. Now, hopefully, this issue can be put to rest once and for all.
