Weddings on the menu at McDonald's

Some McDonald's locations in Hong Kong will offer full-service wedding banquets next year.

Big Mac © McDonald’sMcDonald's (MCD) restaurants in Hong Kong are getting into the wedding business, The South China Morning Post reports.

Starting next year, some McDonald's locations will offer full wedding banquet service -- complete with an appearance by Ronald McDonald. The happy couple will never forget their wedding cake, either. Cakes can be made of cheeseburgers, Filet-o-Fish sandwiches or apple pies.

The cost? Around $300 to $400, the company estimates. A steal compared to a traditional hotel wedding banquet, which can run as high as $50,000. McDonald's Hong Kong also wants to host wedding anniversary parties.

Why would anyone do this? For some couples, McDonald's signifies a key point in their romance. They met at one, perhaps, or went there on a date.

McDonald's Hong Kong says it gets about 10 calls a month from couples who want a wedding banquet under the Golden Arches. "We see this as a business chance," a spokeswoman told the Post.

Price is obviously a factor. One researcher told the Post that young people in Hong Kong don't earn as much as they used to. University graduates may only earn a few thousand dollars a year. Post continues after video:
"They have saved money for years and can't buy flats when they get married," the researcher said.

People get married at McDonald's restaurants in the U.S. from time to time. One couple married in a North Dakota McDonald's in 2007 after meeting there for weekly dates for a year.

But the Hong Kong operation is the first official McDonald's wedding program in the world. Let's raise a milkshake to the couples that tie the knot there -- saving themselves a bunch of money in the process.
