Sony (SNE) shares rallied 11% near noon after the New York Times reported that Dan Loeb of Third Point has built a 6.5% stake and proposes that the company take its entertainment unit public.

BlackBerry (BBRY) kicked off its three-day BlackBerry Live event by announcing its upcoming Q5 mid-tier phone with a physical keyboard aimed at emerging markets.

The company also said it plans to bring the BlackBerry Messenger platform to Apple's (AAPL) iOS and Google's (GOOG) Android shortly. The phone maker's shares, which had been up about 7% in the last week prior to the event, fell nearly 4% in midday trade.

Among the notable gainers was SodaStream (SODA), which rose 14% after at least two firms increased their price targets on its shares following the company's analyst presentation, made yesterday afternoon.

Also higher were shares of InterOil (IOC), which advanced over 10% after reporting its earnings and saying its talks with "major oil companies and a national oil company" about a potential LNG partnership are in the final stages.

Among the noteworthy losers was Velti (VELT), which slid 12% after announcing earnings and guiding to second quarter and full-year revenue below estimates.

Also lower was Trina Solar (TSL), which fell about 8% after the company lowered its outlook for solar module shipments in the first quarter.
