Want an iPad Mini? You'll have to wait

Deliveries have been delayed, and that's a good thing. Some reviewers say the device isn't a good value.

AppleApple (AAPL), which recently reported a rare earnings disappointment, has whipped its fan base into a frenzy with the iPad Mini. Demand quickly outstripped supply, and deliveries have been delayed. It's a good thing, too.

Sales of iPads fell 18% in the quarter, according to ComputerWorld. The decline was worse than expected, in part because consumers were waiting for the new device to be launched. Whether the frenzy will last remains to be seen.

While reviews of the device have been largely positive, they haven't been as fawning as they have been for other Apple products. For instance, Eric Limer at Gizmodo argued that the Nexus 7 offers consumers a better value. Others, such as Jessica Dolcourt at CNET, say the Mini's deficiencies are glaring.

"Certainly existing Apple fans will gravitate toward it, but there's a question mark over how good the Mini actually is," she wrote. "It's lighter and thinner than the competition, but the screen resolution lacks Apple's crystal clarity, and the battery life is on par with rivals, but won't surpass it."

Of course, the iPad Mini has got plenty going for it. The device's size and price point may make it attractive for the education market. Apple will sell plenty of Minis during the holiday season. The company also plans to launch an online radio service to compete against Pandora (P), which will help bolster sales.

Apple, which sold 14 million tablets last quarter, controls about 70% of the tablet market, a level of dominance that clearly won't last, because it rarely does.

Besides the Nexus 7, Apple faces pressure from Microsoft (MSFT)'s new Surface tablet, though reviews have been harsh. Amazon.com (AMZN) may be the most formidable rival. The e-commerce behemoth, which on Thursday reported a $274 million loss, sells its Kindle e-readers at cost. Uneconomical competitors are always the toughest. Apple's best days are not behind it, but its days ahead will certainly be challenging.

I cannot wait to get mine. Still waiting for my iPhone 5. Have to have everything first. Then I put it with all the rest of the outdated crap in my closet and wait for the next new must have gizmo. Isn't it great to live in this day and age when we can help the land mines fill up with worthless junk? And I love that Apple makes sure I have to buy seperate charging connectors and doesn't allow for SD cards or memory sticks so if I want more space I have to pay for it. They are great. They are helping fill the land mines as well. Apple is making life better for everyone. Thank you, Steve Jobs. Your legacy lives on.

See, I thought Apple already made a smaller iPad... it's called the iPod Touch, or is that too small? God, people are never happy with anything.

It's very overpriced at $330, by 65%, and is only one half of the Microsoft Surface for $599 with keyboard. Apple's finally going to get the competition they deserve from Microsoft and it's device makers. The Lumia 920 beats the iPhone 5, many Windows 8 tablets using ARM and Intel beat the iPad across all categories.

Being in IT and having to deal with these devices on a daily basis I can't wait for Win8 and having the same OS on across the board.

The iPad Mini looks impressive, and thankfully I placed an order for it before they were starting to sell out! This version is just the right size for me, and while I use my iPad 2 a lot, it’ll be nice to carry around a smaller version when I’m on business trips for DISH. I use my iPad for everything, including watching TV through the DISH Remote Access app. I’ve been able to watch live or recorded shows on my DVR when I’m away from home. It’s about time that Apple came out with a midrange-sized tablet device, and the iPad Mimi fits that bill rather easily.
