New iPad coming in April?
One report says that the iPad 2 could start shipping within months, leading to an April launch.
That could mean the iPad 2 will launch in April, the site suggests. Reporters from Digitimes wrote the story after talking to unnamed sources at Foxconn Electronics' plants in Shenzhen, China.
Neither Apple nor Foxconn would confirm the news, so this one heads to the rumor column. The article also says that Apple originally wanted to begin mass production of the iPad 2 in January but delayed that because its firmware is still in testing.
If the article is correct, Apple still wants to sell the original iPad through the end of March. Sources say Apple will place about 1.6 million to 1.8 million units of original iPad orders in January but will cut order volumes the next month to let the remaining inventory last until the end of March.
An April launch date would be exactly one year after Apple began selling the original iPad, Fortune notes. Apple won't say much about this news, of course, because any indication of a new iPad would immediately slow existing iPad sales.
The pressure is on Apple to maintain its considerable lead in the tablet market. Competitors on all sides are developing their own tablets for launch.
