Sick of Starbucks? Move to Wyoming
A map of the coffee giant's locations turns up some interesting details. For example, the farthest you can get from a company-owned shop in America is 140 miles.
Starbucks (SBUX) has turned its focus to international expansion, and for good reason: The company has already conquered America.James Davenport, a doctoral candidate at the University of Washington, recently put together a map of all the Starbucks-owned locations in the continental U.S. Keep in mind that these are only the sites that Starbucks owns, and not the locations inside places like Safeway (SWY) and Target (TGT). If you included those, the map would be far more crowded.
Davenport has pulled together some interesting bits of information about Starbucks. Here are some things you might not know about the company and its U.S. locations:
1. The farthest you can get from a company-owned Starbucks in America is 140 miles.
2. That point is on the Idaho-Wyoming border near Grand Teton National Park.
3. More than 80% of Americans (or about 250 million people) live within 20 miles of a Starbucks.
4. Your rent is higher when you live closer to a Starbucks location. This isn't necessarily because of Starbucks, although proximity to one might be considered a perk. Starbucks likes to place locations in urban areas, and urban areas generally charge higher rents. Davenport pointed to the Rentonomy blog, which analyzed Starbucks sites in London and found that for every half of a kilometer a property sits from a Starbucks, the rent falls by an average of 20% (up to 2.5 kilometers away).
You can see your nearby Starbucks locations by entering your address at this site.
Davenport said his project came out of a discussion about data companies selling lists of business locations for high prices. These companies sell the Starbucks database for nearly $200, he added. "It was a natural fit for a project, once some data-savvy friends and I decided to gather the SBUX location data ourselves," he said in an email interview.
What conclusions did he draw after crunching the numbers? "Starbucks does a fantastic job of providing coffee coverage for the U.S.," he said. "I think this project shows just how much Starbucks is part of the American experience."
