Seriously? Another broken Carnival ship?
Just when we thought the cruise line was out of hot water, another problem causes more negative press.
When it rains, it pours. Yet another Carnival (CCL) cruise liner experienced mechanical problems with passengers on board. This time on the (ironically named) Carnival Dream.
According to the cruise line, after making a scheduled port call Wednesday, a backup generator stopped working during routine tests. Carnival officials said, "There were periodic interruptions to elevators and restroom services for a few hours last night. However, all hotel systems are functioning normally and have been functional since approximately 12:30am," according to the Associated Press.
Carnival was making plans to fly passengers home from St. Maarten where the ship is currently docked. They will receive a refund for the three days of the voyage and a voucher good for 50% off of their next "dream" vacation.
On top of that, the next cruise on the ship, scheduled for March 16, has already been cancelled. Those guests will receive a full refund, a 25% off coupon for their next cruise (although it will probably be on Royal Caribbean (RCL)), and a refund of all nonrefundable travel expenses. And finally, the fare paid for their current cruise will be good for their next booking.
Carnival said, "We are very sorry for this disruption to our guests' vacation plans and extend our sincere apologies. We look forward to welcoming them back on another Carnival cruise."
This follows the recent incident where the Carnival Triumph was stranded at sea for several days earlier this year. Then there was the Costa Concordia, also owned by Carnival, which ran aground in Italy killing 32 people and in 2010, the Carnival Splendor was stranded at sea for several days after experiencing a fire.
And Carnival isn't the only cruise line with problems. On March 10, Royal Caribbean's Vision of the Seas docked in Port Everglades, Fla., after about 5% of the 1,991 passengers and 772 crew members became sick with the norovirus -- an outbreak that has struck numerous cruise ships since its discovery in Australia one year ago, according to the Globalpost.
The ship was scheduled for sanitizing before embarking on its next cruise.
Bottom line -- let's be glad that the Carnival mechanics don't work for one of the airlines and if you're cruising on a Royal Caribbean ship, that queasiness you feel may not be seasickness.
In afternoon trading Thursday, Carnival is up about 0.5% and Royal Caribbean is up 2%.
I guess on my next cruise it will not be on a carnival cruise line ship. The whole line should shut down and every ship should be docked and inspected before they cruise again.
something is really bad with this cruise line. Maybe they are cutting to many corners to up their stock on the stock market
We cruised on a Carnival ship on a four day trip to Mexico a couple years ago and had the worst time. The cruise ship was filthy, the dining rooms were overcrowded, the food was lousy, the staff was lazy and the service was poor.
When we boarded in Los Angeles on a Monday afternoon and prepared for departure, we saw a table set up in a public area that had a white linen table cloth on it displaying brochures about excursions that were being offered. Someone had spilled some type of red colored drink on the table cloth. That table and stained table cloth remained there for the entire four day cruise. People spilled drinks on the pool deck area during the late afternoon and evening area. When we got up the next morning to walk the deck, the spilled drinks and the accompanying slices of fruit were still on the deck. Our stateroom had black mold in the grout in the corners of the shower. We saw a pregnant woman with a small child attempting to pull a lounge chair from a stack of other chairs, and even though there were two Carnival employees (deck attendants) standing not ten feet away talking, neither made any attempt to assist her. It was another passenger and myself that got the deck chair down for her.
I would NOT recommend anyone travel on a Carnival cruise. We have, however, cruised with Royal Caribbean Cruise Line at least ten times since then and would highly recommend them.
