McDonald's (MCD), Texas Instruments (TXN) and Covidien (COV) all announced double-digit percentage increases to their quarterly dividends after the closing bell Thursday.

Among those reporting earnings after the bell Thursday and before the open Friday, Oracle (ORCL), Darden (DRI) and KB Home (KBH) all advanced.

Among the notable gainers in the market Friday were Halozyme (HALO), up 30%, and ViroPharma (VPHM), up 8%, after the FDA gave guidance enabling ViroPharma to resume clinical studies of a drug it is developing that uses Halozyme technology for delivery.

Also higher were shares of Michael Kors (KORS), which rose nearly 5% after the company raised its view for its quarterly and full year profit.

Among the noteworthy losers was Blyth (BTH), down another 15% following a slide yesterday after Moody's said it has reduced its outlook for the company. Also lower were shares of VIVUS (VVUS), which fell 11% after the company said a European regulatory committee would likely recommend that its Qsiva anti-obesity drug not be approved.
