Sears to close 62 more stores

The company is dropping clothing from 10 locations and looking to shutter some Hometown and Hardware stores.

Image: Sears sign© Spencer Platt/Getty Images News/Getty ImagesSears Holdings (SHLD) already said it would close as many as 120 Sears and Kmart stores this year in an effort to turn the business around. But that wasn't enough.

The struggling retailer said Thursday it will have to tighten its belt even more. Sears is now planning to close 43 Hometown stores, 10 Sears Hardware stores and all nine stores in the Great Indoors chain. Hometown stores are independently operated, and sell hardware in mostly rural areas.

Sears is also getting rid of clothing in 10 Sears stores -- perhaps in a test run for a chain-wide initiative in the future. Instead, those stores will sell more household items such as mattresses and furniture, the Associated Press reports. Shoppers have requested more choices in those areas, the company told the AP.

Sears has been busy with a number of moves designed to stem the bleeding from its bottom line. It's been trying to spin off its Hometown and Outlet stores, but the closure of 43 of those may show how well that's going. It's also selling 11 locations to General Growth Properties (GGP).

Scratching clothing from its lineup could be a very good move for Sears. Most people don't shop there for clothes. They might pick up some clothing as an afterthought, but they visit Sears stores for appliances and hardware.

Sears is going to have a harder time competing in clothing and other areas as JCPenney (JCP) completes its transformation into a trendier, more compelling chain. Target (TGT) continues to press forward in clothing, bringing in designer names like Jason Wu and adding in-store boutiques. Sears also has Macy's (M) and Kohls to contend with.

After years of just coasting on "good enough," Sears is finally making some drastic and necessary moves.

Any jack hole who blames this on any president should stay under his rock. Didn't you just read the CEO just bought some expensive property?  If the CEO's would stop watching TV thinking the Kardashians can save them and upgrade their stores and hire people who are willing to HELP customers, they wouldn't be in this mess.

I ordered a GPS to be picked up at the store the folloing day.   I didn't get my item until 3 weeks later after numerous calls explaining it to 6 different people. (hung up on 3 different time).  Even though they had billed my credit card, they showed absolutely no interest in getting me my merchandise.  I even wrote a letter to the corporate office about my situations, never even got an acknowledgement that it was received.  No reply.   Would not have waited 3 week but they refused to credit my credit card for the amount billed. Have not and will not set a foot in that store again.   GOOD RIDDENCE sears baby.

I personally like our local Sears store. It's a small, one story store in the suburbs and it is easy for me and to run in and get what I need. Like most parents on a budget I usually make sure my kids look decent but I don't buy much for myself. They have a program called Kidvantage and if kids clothes (and shoes) wear out you just bring them back and they give you a replacement. It is wonderful! My children wear a school uniform and wear out the knees in their Dockers often. They carry many name brands like Levi's, Reebok, Joe Boxer, etc. I had not shopped at Sears in years but have quite a bit since having children. I get my oil changed there on occasion and bought a nice set of Goodyear tires there. The hours are convenient and work with my schedule unlike a lot of other tire shops. Our store has a Land's End department which is great. Since they have a lifetime guarantee on their clothes I also buy some kids clothes there - they have incredible end of season sales. I would miss Sears if they closed.

why dont you people remember and feel sorry for the original kmart workers and stock holders, who got screwed big time by kmart when they went out of business..sears was one of the very first retailers to offer credit ..thats where the big money was made.eddie lampert the big hedge fund manager who runs sears is a greedy its all about me type of guy. what can you expect, he's a big buddy of loud mouth jimmy cramer. the only value that kmart has is that some of their property has some worth to it. have you noticed over the last several yrs. home depo etc. has purchased some of the old kmart properties to put up their  stores on.lets think about this. banks only give you 1% on your cd's..but the feds let sears and their competitors charge you/us the consumers 18-22% interest on their charge cards. ah,the american way..

I even stopped buying craftsman tools--- Harbor freight has tools of the same low quality tools for half the price! I get the same lifetime warranty without the hassle sears always gives me.

I hope the Sears leadership reads these and realizes customer service and product quality are what matters. Oh apparently not because Walmart and their cheap products seem to be winning.

I said a long time ago that ending the sears catalog would eventually end the store!

Sears won't produce a complete catalog, won't stock anything, and won't even offer decent service or the satisfaction warranty any more.

NO WONDER THEY ARE GOING UNDER!!

I say good riddance. I use to be a loyal Sears shopper and purchase everything I could from them. In January of this year my 75 year old mother who lives on less than $1000 a month went to the local Kmart and purchased a microwave oven. The store was designated for closing and she purchased it for 20% off. Of course, because they had marked it up higher she could have purchased the Kenmore Microwave cheaper at a Sears store. After she got home she removed it from the sealed packaging and plugged it in. The fan began rattling immediately and she turned it off. She called the manager at the store the same day and he refused to swap it for another unit. He said smartly all sales final lady! I called Sears and Kmarts National Customer Relations and they said the same thing. I guess they are proud to rip off an elderly poor lady without remorse. I will not buy one more item for either company. I also ask that you not buy one more item. If you do remember the treatment my mother received. Shame on Sears, and Shame on Kmart. Shame on their National Customer Relations Department for being so unethical.

Where I live the store is almost entirely Spanish Speaking.  The workers,  the clients,  the signs,  all Spanish first,  English as an afterthought.  I am pretty sure that alienates a lot of the old customers.
Their tool department is great,  though.

It's no surprise to me.................................that Sears will not be here tomorrow. I bought a car battery that took 4 hours to get warranty approval. While my car sat in their shop, all they cared about was selling me more of what I didn't need. Maybe Sears should concentrate on what's important rather than trying to wrangle every last dollar out of your wallet. I haven't set foot in a Sears store for 2 years now.

I always shop at Sears and I too remember shopping out of the Sears and the Montgomery Ward catalog when I was a kid. The thing about the extended warranty is that all including Costco sell the same junk that doesn't last so at least if the employees at Sears are getting their customers to buy the extended warranty then when they come back in 6 months because the junk no longer works the customers don't feel like they got ripped because they have the protection agreement. I think Sears has employees that appreciate my business, unlike a lot of companies that I would rather not do business with since customer service is not in their vocabulary- Verizon can you hear me now? -
Kardashian line of close I don't like either however no one said I had to either. Fads come and go this one the sooner the better but that is  my opinion-someone is buying it or they wouldn't be stocking it. As someone else said competition is good - once the competition is gone -We will be the ones that are done!
