No iPad for Christmas? Don't feel bad
One observer gives his reasons for not wanting one yet.
One analyst predicts Apple (AAPL) will sell 6 million this quarter -- about half of them in the U.S. "It's driving the company toward what will probably be yet another blowout Christmas period," Arends writes.
But he says he doesn't want one because it will be cheaper next year. A new one is expected in April, and it's going to be better.
He also doesn't like Apple's margins. Sure, they're great for stockholders but not for shoppers. Last Christmas, Apple grabbed gross margins of 41%. "Me, I don't want to support someone else's 60% markups with my own dollars," he writes. Post continues after video:
He also notes that competitors will finally have tablets out next year that may offer a threat to the iPad. Right now, the only decent tablet out there is the Samsung Galaxy Tab, he says. "When these companies duke it out for market share, you know you'll be able to get a deal. So why would I buy now?"
The iPad doesn't support Flash, so its users can't see many video clips out there on the Web, Arends writes.
The rest of his reasons are a little thin. The cheapest iPad isn't worth it, he says, but the higher-priced ones are too expensive. The games are too addictive. It's a time suck. It'll get boring.
If I had the money, I'd probably be leaning toward an 11-inch MacBook Air instead of an iPad, especially with the Mac App Store scheduled to launch in January.
